Where to live in CA or another state?

My boyfriend wants to live in an outdoorsy type place. Complete with woods and lakes, and all that jazz. I do too, but I also want to live in an area near a big city. I need a lot of stimulation, and if I was in the middle of nowhere I'd get antsy after a while. Any tips on specific places to live? We currently reside in Nor-Cal.
