Why do Cons look to "Republican" figures in History and automatically label them Conservative?

Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin restored MLK's tarnished image yesterday. Before yesterday, left-wingers had managed his legacy which caused many to focus on him being a communist, philanderer and adulterer. Beck and Palin made him into a figure that everyone can respect on some level.
